Getting additional exposure to your website has never been more important. Shareaholic is the latest social media sharing buttons tried on seoRango.com. Several months ago I accessed seorango.com from my cell phone and it was so slow, but for some reason I was not immediately alarmed.
Well, my cell phone carrier throttles down my speed after going over my cell phone plan usage. So, I was thinking that was the issue. To my horror when I thought of the slow loading time again, I was on my computer and the problem was real.
I contacted my hosting and decided to increase my processing speed and after spending additional money on hosting nothing really changed. Contacted my hosting company and talked to the technical support and basically was told its not us.
You know how the story goes, you get all these unsolicited suggestions on what it could be. I wasted hours searching for a solution and finally decided run website speed test at Pingom.
. The first thing I noticed was the request. I had over 150 requests for my homepage and that got my attention immediately.
Scripts running on the site are usually the issue, so I removed the Shareaholic script and started another speed test and BAM! The request went from 150 to 65. The website speed went from about 2.5 seconds to a little over 1 second.
I was not ready to give up on the Social Share buttons just yet, so I went to the Shareaholic discussion group. Several people were discussing concerns with slow load time, but all the moderator was saying it’s not Shareaholic. I got so mad after reading the moderator’s comments, that I clicked my hosting and manually deleted all the scripts from my site.
We tried other scripts like addthis, and sharethis. I am feeling a little indifferent to social shares at the moment.
I also noticed the adroll script on the site that I never implemented. So I removed it and my request went from 65 to about 33. The website speed went from 1 second to about 800 milliseconds. After all, my intention is to sell our services from seRango.com.
One of the main issues I have with our site is not testing before implementing the change. I always think I am too busy and so rushing to implementation stage is where I get into trouble. Getting Social Shares is great, but not of expense of website performance.
